Twitter now allows "non-toxic slurs" as long as the slurs are not hate speech

So who decides what the difference is between hate speech and a “non-toxic slur”? Let me guess- one or more cishet white men.

That’s a slur, but I’ll allow it.

Musk is leaving money on the table.

He should sell checkmarks that allow slurs in particular categories. (A package deal would probably be popular.)

Maybe a special checkmark with a hakenkreuz? Unicode U+5350 would suffice.

Hmm. That’s a simple polite description of what they are, but then so many cishet white men do hate people noticing they have identities too…

Some people might not go full Nazi right away. They might start with racism or misogyny, and work their way up from there.

So maybe a hakenkreuz where you add legs as you level-up u til you hit all 4. Then there are advanced levels where you use the sonnenrad

Is it the FDA or the EPA that determines the allowable toxicity level of a slur?

Perhaps a tag for each category? That way, when you see a user decorated like a Soviet general, there’s no question of what you’re dealing with.

If I’m understanding what they’re trying to get at, it’s not unreasonable. Some words are slurs, but the context makes them hate speech. Black people using the n-word, queer people using the f-word, etc. are “slurs” being used in ways that can be actually affectionate. Twitter’s had a huge problem in that previously people got punished on social media even in those contexts (various bigots often being successful in weaponizing rules against “slurs” to punish the very groups the rules were meant to protect), so understanding context is important.

Of course, Twitter’s not going to do that. Even if that’s the intention, they couldn’t manage it before, much less after being bought by a Nazi sympathizer and firing all their content moderators. (And the idea of using AI for this is just laughable.)
