Armchair social science is a perfect characterization of the problem. Social science is already plagued with weak bullshit studies built on crappy self-reported data sets (like surveys of white psychology undergrads). There’s plenty of good social science also, but it’s really easy to do it poorly. Modern Twitter-based journalism has managed to make this even worse, manufacturing influential headlines from small piles trash anecdotes taken from whoever yells the loudest on Twitter.
