At least according to the official story, Germany is just now starting to train Ukrainians on the Marder, and starting soon with training on Leopard 2s
It would be typical German to first take the time to go over the training material, figure out how to overcome the language barrier, things like that, and then start the official training.
On a personal note, I drove a Bradley as an armored reconnaissance specialist (or “cav scout”) from 1987 to 1990, barely avoiding the first gulf war to liberate Kuwait. My regiment was partnered with a German unit, the Panzergrenadierbattalion 125 with Marders. We kind of envied them for having the Marder, it just seemed a wee bit better than the Bradley at the time. Marders are rugged and well designed.
It looks like Poland is also just about now starting to train Ukrainian Leopard crews
While I was looking for the above, I came across this article, which has some interesting tidbits I hadn’t seen anywhere else
Offenbar gab es aber schon vor der Entscheidung für die Leopard-Lieferungen Trainingsprogramme für ukrainische Panzerbesatzungen. Jetzt also könnte tatsächlich alles sehr schnell gehen
“It would appear that even prior to the decision about Leopard delivery being taken, training programs for Ukrainian tank crews existed. So now everything could move very quickly indeed”
I don’t know whether that training was done in Germany or in Poland, but it seems the official story that they’re only starting now has a few cracks.
Das Pentagon will die Abrams für Kiew nicht aus Beständen der US-Armee liefern, sondern bei der Industrie bestellen. Und das kann dauern: möglicherweise mehr als zehn Monate.
“The pentagon does not want to deliver the Abrams for Kyiv from army stocks, but order them from industry. And that can take its time: possibly more than 10 months.”
So looks like the American decision is another pork barrel. Whatever you think of Scholz’s strategy, you can’t accuse him of that.
Er ist kein Mensch, er ist kein Tier - er ist ein Panzergrenadier!
(Sorry. It could not be helped.)
You might be on to something here. All the preliminary stuff could be done quite discreet. Maybe even starting to train a couple of the future instructors in the simulators to give them a head start, identify potential stumbling blocks and see how to adapt the regular training to speed up the essential parts and maybe skip some of the less important bits.
The UK will begin training Ukrainian soldiers next week in how to use and fix the tanks being sent to the country, the government has announced.
Defence Minister Alex Chalk told MPs in the House of Commons, “On the issue of training, I am pleased to say that is expected to start next week on Monday.”
That should be tomorrow.
True, but probably tied to an existing one. The Army has for years asked Congress to stop buying new tanks, saying existing stocks are enough. Congress keeps forcing them to get new ones. Now the factory in Ohio gets more jobs.
