If you compare recidivism rates in the US and the UK prisons where vengeance and punishment is the order of the day vs Scandinavia where they are actually trying to treat prisoners like good citizens so they will be good citizens when they are released, the failure of the punishment philosophy becomes apparent. It is sort of the domestic version of drone warfare, creating more resentment in prisoners guarantees propagation of the antisocial impulse.
