This is called “conservative empathy”.
This has been a programming headache of mine for years. Trying to ship internationally to that area is a nightmare. Different shippers disagree on what codes apply to what areas.
I believe it’s Team GB partly at the request of the Irish government, as athletes from Northern Ireland can choose to represent either Great Britain or Ireland.

not all keyboards/encodings make it’s use easy online. GBP is standard usage in banking and finance.
