“Under the Banner of King Death PDF” (2.9 MB)
When it came out in 1981, it really revolutionized our understanding of pirates, piracy, and their social structures. He’s largely responsible for introducing the idea of pirate ships as hives of democracy. The article, and his work in general, has come under some [deserved, imo] criticism for basing broad conclusions on few sources, as well as some errors of fact. But, it’s an important piece worth reading.
Reddiker’s Villains of All Nations was one of my big sources when I did my senior project in college on the history of pirates. This is definitely a purchase.
