Pirates/Privateers are one of the reasons we gained our independence from England. They were very good at taking anything the British ships had, and selling it to the Colonies, nice set up if ya ask me.

National Geographic had a traveling exhibit a few years back about pirates. A couple of the things I found interesting were that pirates often behaved like a cooperative, and they provided a form of health and ADD insurance.
