ETA: I got hip to this weird aquatic toad by way of Three Singles to Adventure (AKA Three Tickets to Adventure), one of Gerald Durrell’s many books about collecting animals for zoos.
The soon-to-be mama toad was kept in a large bucket aboard the ship taking them to their new homes. The sailors thought she was hideous - Durrell himself described them as looking “partially decomposed” - but they became quite enamored of her when he told them of her species’ bizarre birth-giving.
They all gathered round with Durrell, fascinated, as her babies began wriggling free of her back during the voyage. Big, tough-guy sailors were in fearful tears, worrying when some of the babies had a hard time of it, and cheering when they got free.
Everyone whom Gerald Durrell came in contact with changed the way they thought about animals, and he helped them realize their ecological importance.

if anyone near putin wants to be really funny for the ides of march… just saying
The Ides of March is a curious choice of holiday for tumblr users to celebrate. It’s become a huge thing every year. Folks even post memes, puns, etc on the days preceding and following it.
