Not all that unlikely - many horses and barn cats have fallen in love since they were introduced to one another millennia ago.
We were walking to warm up a little before a lesson one Saturday afternoon, when I let the school horse I rode alla time follow Morris the ginger barn cat all around the arena. Ollie just trundled after him, his nose affectionately on his tail or back the entire time. Morris was rather nonplussed, but didn’t run away. Ollie had quite a loving expression on his little face. Everyone cracked up.
