Breaching may also be intended to dislodge parasites. Tons of whale flesh bashed against the water surface could accomplish that. If only murderous whalers could be just as easily addressed.

M’kay…turns out parasites like certain mites can cause hedgehogs to lose their spines and in some of those cases massage therapy can help them to regrow them.
