"Urban whore" sexism train wrecks Scientific American's holiday weekend

Aaaah thankyou! You sir, have added the final ingredient! Long Live Godwin!

Brown, particularly sparkly metallic brown, is a great color for a car! I have seriously not-even-joking been eyeing this color myself for a while now. You car racist!

For a while huh?! See, you’re not so in-love-with-brown-paint yourself, buddy. What’s holding you back? Huh? Huh?

That said - If Icon cars refurbished one of these for me, I’d do it:

For one of those, I’d go 70’s crazy metallic pink, purple, green, whatever - i have no boundaries.

Brown cars need vinyl roofs.

Hey, can you prove that when Hitler referred to Judaism as a virus, he was trying to be antisemitic? Maybe he just meant that Judaism spreads by its adherents reproducing. Let’s not rush to judgement here.

Racial interpretation of “urban”?

Here’s some citations about “urban” as a euphemism for non-white, specifically black.

"… ‘urban’ (which is usually a business euphemism for
“black”) audiences … "

Herbert Jack Rotfeld, (2003) “Misplaced marketing: Who do you hire when the advertising audience isn’t you?”, Journal of Consumer Marketing, Vol. 20 Iss: 2, pp.87 - 89

“While most urban health studies ‘account’ for race, few analyze the
impact of racism. US society has adopted a number of euphemisms,
including “urban centers,” “inner cities,” and “ethnic
minorities,” that tend to obscure the central issue.”

Cohen, Hillel W. & Mary E. Northridge, (2000) “Getting Political: Racism and Urban Health.” American Journal of Public Health; Vol.90, pp.841–842. (emphasis mine)

Cf. the Urban League, who also use the word urban, although connect it directly to race:

The mission of the Urban League movement is to enable African
Americans to secure economic self-reliance, parity, power and civil
rights.

This Straight Dope message board thread does a neat job connecting the dots between [The Great Migration][5], the Urban League and “urban” as a euphemism for black.

As to how sexism and racism aren’t as neatly seperable as you might think, I recommend this article.:

Buchanan, N. T., & Ormerod, A. J. (2002). Racialized sexual harassment in the lives of African American women. Women & Therapy, 25(3-4), 107-124.

Here’s a key quote, bolding mine:

Sexual and racial harassment may be combined in unique ways for
African American women. Specifically, the cultural and historical
contexts of slavery and sexualized stereotypes of African American
women result in sexual harassment that is percieved as racially
motivated (Collins, 1998, 200;Murrell, 1996; Winston, 1991). Moreover,
the harassment is likely to take different forms in the lives of Black
women than in the lives of White women. For example, although a
coworker may refer to a White woman as a whore or slut, an African
American woman may be called a Black whore, which creates an
experience that combines aspects of both race and gender oppression

(Buchanan, 1999).

Do not get a brown car. I don’t understand why, but other drivers just don’t seem to see them. The first month we had ours, the car was sideswiped twice: once while sitting in a row of cars at a stop light (sideswipe came from the left hand turn lane) and once while parked in the parking lane. Thanks to defensive driving, I have managed to keep the car from being hit while I’m actually driving it, but close calls – usually someone moving sideways into our lane as if we weren’t there – happen almost every single time I drive.

One of my favorite colors for the Beetle was metallic copper. Metallic green was the other. Darn it, a Beetle should look like a beetle. Though I suppose I can excuse those which instead tried to look like Beatles.

Probably best to go at least two or three levels deeper than that, IMO.

Straw men, also brown.

But it can certainly be intended.

Rosalyn Terborg-Penn approves of this comment!

I still remember when “urban” implied being young and professional.

Lest we forget.

Hey everyone.
