Vi Hart: cramming G+ into YouTube has made comments even worse, I'm leaving

There’s a reason I’m SteampunkBanana here instead of REDACTED. It’s not stalking, I just don’t want everyone at work to know I spend any time during the day here.

Surely the comments themselves should be the gauge as to whether the person is worth talking to?

Also, I don’t do a lot of talking to strangers in pubs, but keep in mind that awesome people are also strangers before you meet them.

According to Google, there are 300 million active in-stream Google+ users in any given month. That is, 300 million people who actually use it as a social network and read their update stream; not just people who are forced to create an account they don’t use. The figure for people merely using Google+ incidentally (e.g. by +1ing a page) is 540 million. And those figures are from before the Youtube crosslink.

In comparison, Twitter’s IPO said they have 232 million active users in any given month.

So yes, Google+ has more active users than Twitter, unless you think Google are flat out lying.

The problem is, Youtube’s actual video service is far and away superior to Vimeo or anything else.

It’s an opportunity for someone to come along and displace YouTube, since their service for the video users/creators (as opposed to the advertisers, who are the genuine customers) is lacking

Yes. Not to minimize the real pain that people who could have benefited from anonymous communications or were hurt by being outed by G+. Those events are NON OPTIMAL and should stop. Stop now. I mean right now, 'mkay?

But methinks the kerfluffle and butthurtedness is from the initial roll-out and some extreme cases (like Dr. Kiki) that were just silly. That regime is over. Now G+ is a big tent  Nyms welcome.

In time, all this will be forgotten. G+ will just be another one of our perceptual / content slurping overlays. Move along. Nothing to see. Just the Moment.

Did you… did you read my post? I wasn’t arguing that Google+ didn’t have more active users than twitters, I was arguing with the point made that Google was the second biggest social networking site on the planet. (Hence why I made a point of noting a non-Facebook social network that had more users) An active user base of 300 million leaves them in … fourth place? Fifth place? Still ahead of twitter, but way behind the other big players.

Off topic, but could someone tell me how to delete notifications on this BBS.

Thanks.

I’m tired of the ‘google+ is worthless’ meme. I really am.

Having said that though. Google+ does not need to be involved with Youtube and in fact google needs to go home and revise the G+ UI to not be so bloated that on lightweight hardware like mine that’s only a couple years old can’t use it without bogging down.

I respect your like to disagree with it, even to the point of fatigue; but calling my position a ‘meme’ is a bit of a slur.

‘Meme’ suggests something that spreads like a brain-virus through the unwashed unconscious of the internet, hopping from host to host purely on the basis of its ability to reproduce, rather than any value, correctness, or even humor.

It is in scope for you to make the argument that I’m just mindlessly parroting an opinion I heard on the internet and allowed to crawl into my brain; but simply asserting that an argument is a ‘meme’ is an end to all debate purely by assertion(as well as a slur on the competence of whoever you are alleging is a mere meme-carrier).

If you wan to defend the utility of Google+, fine; but casual dismissal of the (widespread) dislike of it as merely memetic isn’t going to cut it.

And your dismissal of an entire social network as useless isn’t a slur?

Dislike all you like. I’ts the ‘oh this has nobody there so it is unimportant’ is… annoying because it is false. Don’t like it. Awesome for you especially if you are happy where you are. but it is neither empty nor ‘useless’… though right now the interface issues make me dislike it.

Sigh

This isn’t productive.

Thanks.

Google might as well start giving people tattoos that say - “Property Of Google”. Corporate Takeover is complete, it official now.

HA! I’ve found you at last, J. Smith!

If they’re counting my IMs that used to not be on Google+, my photo auto-backup from my phone that I don’t share with anyone, then I’d say it’s possible they’re inflating their importance as a “Social Network” in an arguably dishonest way.
