It looks like the mechanic for dogs ‘smiling’ is raising the eyebrows and dropping the lower jaw. I’m guessing their cheek muscles don’t work the same as humans, so you don’t get the closed-mouth ‘smile’.

It also depends a lot on their face shape. Some are just naturally smiley-looking no matter what they’re feeling. Lots of people think my dog is smiling when he’s actually panting anxiously, or just warm. When he’s really happy you can often tell by the head angle and squinty eyes.
