That was a very apt comparison. It got a real chuckle out of me.

The finger keys control audio band filters that do most of the work. This idea was later refined to automate control of the filters from an audio signal and used for transmission of long distance telephone calls. Take the encoded filtration and apply it to music instead of buzz/hiss and you get a Vocoder.
I just watched the very short original demo and it really didn’t say anything that could be interpreted as formant filtering, which is what she was actually playing, so the explanation was useless!
Sounds a little like WOPR to me.
I love robot voices. That’s awesome and way earlier than I would have guessed.
