I wouldn’t punish the liquor store for that. Some states do require that everyone be carded even if they are not paying. Generally, the rules liquor stores and bars put in place are stringent and inflexible so that the people who are working don’t have to spend their whole day arguing with people who don’t want to be carded. The penalties for selling to someone underage are severe and law enforcement has been known to test liquor stores and bars by sending in underaged customers who are belligerent about being carded. It’s just not worth it for them to risk going to jail, it’s far better to be strict on the policy and decline to sell to someone who cannot prove their age. I think if you put yourself in their place, you’d agree that you may have been inconvenienced but they shouldn’t have to risk imprisonment to convenience you.
