What I’ve always been curious about with flamingos is that they seem to be adapted to water of a very specific depth; six inches deeper or shallower, and their whole body plan is useless. They must be worried about climate change.
If you’re ever fortunate enough to find yourself on the island of Bonaire, be sure to visit the salt flats on the southern end of the island - that’s where the flamingos are. They hang out in the salt pans and feed on the krill there and then - every night, just as the sun is setting - they all (hundreds of 'em) rise up, filling the sky with pink and soaring only a few meters overhead - and then they all fly off 70 miles to Venezuela for the night. Incredible.
Cool! So, next question – Why are their feet webbed?
Easier to hang onto when playing croquet.
I went to see the documentary about these fascinating birds called “Pink Flamingos”… Boy was I disappointed!!!
