Bats are nocturnal, and shy creatures by nature, so if you get bitten during the day near a noisy campsite and are a huge moving creature–that bat is crazy. And crazy bats are rabid.
As noted above, rabies is fatal if you become symptomatic. It is too late to save you. You need to be treated before it gets to your brain (it travels along nerves), so neck bite here needs to be treated more quickly than a toe bite. He was smart to have the bat tested, smarter still would have been to just say “I was bitten by a wild animal, I suspect it was rabid, and need to begin treatment.” Testing or no, /begin treatment/. Getting abdominal shots sucks. Dying horribly of a preventable disease is worse.
I do wonder if the bat did attack this particular guy because of what the sound of the guitar looked like in the Bat’s state.
