I remember a wonderful gig in London years ago with the Indigo Girls headlining. After a couple of songs, there was a certain amount of mic rearranging, and they announced that they would be having a special guest coming on later. Much quiet discussion about who, mostly suggesting Michael Stipe, who guested on ‘Kid Fears’ on their 1989 eponymous second album. A bit later, Emily, IIRC, said ‘well, we said we had a special guest, it’s someone we’ve worked with and who we respect and love, we call her the Matriarch,’ (cue much confusion), ‘ladies and gentlemen, would you welcome Joan Baez!’
The crowd went wild, it was only shortly before that it was announced that Joan was recording again after several decades of political work. Seeing Joan on stage in a fairly small, intimate venue was an incredible experience.
