Unless we are imagining some socialist utopia where the state controls the casting and production of filmsā¦ Which we arenāt right? Who honestly believes that could work? Then the marketplace is the only real recourse we have, watch films with diverse casts, with casts YOU personally can identify with, I do thatā¦
This accomplishes little if anything in terms of increasing ādiversityā and ārealismā in film in television and film making, because Iām guilty of being about as white/straight/cis gendered/nominal member of the abhorrent majority as it is possible to beā¦
The state of diversity in film/literature in our popular/shared culture is rather embarrassing, but other than some state imposed mandate, how exactly is one supposed to āfixā the situation?

Were a interesting and diverse selection of Europeans ruled by Germany any particular religion or were they pretty much just Europeans when they came for us?
There were Catholic, protestant, Muslim, atheist, and it seems even old Norse believers represented in those who sought to use industrial science to wipe us out.
I will admit to being too close to the topic, but 1/3 of my people were wiped out in living memory. My family was in the US by the 1870s but nearly every other Ashkenazi I know including my business partner is directly affected. For example, he was born in a Germany DP camp in the 50s, both parents were widowed by the German death machine.
I feel like when non-white kids fear sudden death at the hands of whites, especially cops, many Jews fear death in a less sudden more organized fashion. For your assertion that I hate whites would you then agree that blacks also hate whites because of slavery and oppression? Just because we are wary due to overwhelming historical precedent does not mean we do not have many close personal relationships with whites, it is the group white which kills and schemes not so much individuals for Jews. In Asia they just treat the Jews as foreigners, I have never heard of a pogrom happening in China.

He is the child of holocaust survivors, that itself requires sensitivity, but in my experience also leads to some damage for the kids. I feel that Dr. Finkelstein has decided antisemitism is caused by the existence of Jews and their historical non-assimilation.
I have not reviewed much of his stuff at all, but he has submitted content to the website of and appeared on the David Duke podcast, so has smeared himself in Dukeās shit and has lost all credibility by that association. Anyone good enough for Duke is on the dark side.

I just went and checked out Dukeās webpage (GAH, gross) to see if Finkelstein has written for himā¦ there are plenty of posts ABOUT him (or that name check him, or that have his name as a tag, etc), but none by him (TBH, I didnāt look very long). Can you point me to evidence of his connection with Duke (other than duke disgustingly using political dialog to give himself a figleaf of legitmacy)?
I donāt find him antisemetic, in what Iāve seen by him at least. Criticism of Israel is not antisemetic on its own.

In news more directly related to this article, forumites here might be interested in a newish documentary on āShowrunnersā available (I saw it on Netflix), thatās pretty interesting. It doesnāt spend a lot of time on the diversity issue, but it touches on it, and it was heartening to see that the people in TV writersā rooms are starting to look more varied than I had expected, not just in ethnicity, but in age and demeanor. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1942971/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
I sometimes find myself thinking/speaking this way. Then I remember that Iām a white middle-class cis-male speaking from atop a golden mountain of privilege, and I should probably check my ārationalā mansplaining when it comes to sidelining identity politics issues because they donāt strongly affect me personally.

Duke does seem to name check him quite a bit, and I didnāt do an exhaustive search. But it just doesnāt seem likely to me.

Iām Jewish but blond hair and blue eyes, so I donāt look it, and most people perceive me as white. But then when I look at my friends at Temple very few really jump out as being stereotypically Jewish looking with dark curly hair and funny noses.

ACK. Made a very stupid first response, a product of not reading it and too much multi-tasking, so will just note: (For some stupid reason I thought the poster was saying white americans are only 30% of the population, but they are clearly saying white males with an emphasis on male.)
Yes, there should be more female leads. And there should be more leads of a variety of backgrounds. Statistics should not come into play at all, because we donāt watch shows wanting what is average, we watch for what is exceptional, implausible, unlikely (albeit a key ingredient to that mix is it is also made plausible, but this plausibility does not stretch to the racial, cultural, and gender background of the lead character.)
Not all white Americans are male.
