What if we limited the number of white men in film and TV?

But you are, child, you are.

Ah, the old “don’t complain about a film|book|game|sports-car|D&D rules change|crying-baby unless you can make your own” game, eh?

Yet… I notice you commented on a blog-post instead of writing your own blog post.

Yet I do commend you on your confrontation of mass media by making your own media whenever you have a complaint. I look forward to watching your movies*, reading your books*, playing your games*, driving your cars**, etc etc etc.

No I’m not. You’re responsible for yourself & I am responsible for myself. Interdependence is only desired by the dependent.

But if one does not make, one cannot comment?

Am I allowed to criticize a law without ever having written a law of my own?

You’re posting from a Micro-Nation that you built with your own hands? Impressed.

Don’t forget digging the trenches for the water main to his home, and the roads, and the phone lines…

Of course, nobody is actually saying that there should be rules put into place in order to force diversity… You did read the article, right?

And the “why don’t they make more of their own entertainment” argument is ridiculous. They do, in fact, but it doesn’t get much mainstream distribution because the people responsible for said distribution are almost exclusively wealthy white men. And they don’t want to make entertainment featuring anything other than white men because of reasons. So yeah, criticizing that isn’t really a bad thing.

Honestly, at the time I was kind of pissed that section existed at all. Which is really my own white privilege saying that I don’t have to think about race or ethnicity. It’s a pretty standard thing for schools to ask, for the reasons @Brainspore outlined.

And I’m a literal person. I like things to be accurate. In order to be accurate, I checked both. With the side bonus that I got to be a little difficult.

But this article, like most on how to increase diversity, relies on the idea of creating diversity by force & that is what I have a problem with. Nobody seems to be capable of finding a way to encourage diversity without some form of law enforcement backing it up.

You know, I don’t generally find you as confrontational as other people seem to, but flames on the side of cars are freaking awesome.

Well, if you read the article, you appear to have missed the point of it. It actually offers NO solutions on how to increase diversity, aside from “demand more of it”. It’s just pointing out how ridiculous it would be to put a cap on the number of white men in film and TV, and relating that to the reality that this is exactly what is done right now to women and minorities in film and TV.

Take it as a mental exercise then, as it’s never actually going to happen (at least not to that extent). The idea that nothing notable is happening to non white people is absurd, so it’s interesting to think about what their stories would look like. It’s easy for a white person to look at the current situation as acceptable, but we’d be pretty annoyed if our on-screen presence was reduced, even if it were only to representational levels. Why is that? White people tend to be richer and more influential, but in many cases fiction can imagine exceptions to this rule and there’s no a priori reason why a specific character must be white. Plenty of successful movies and shows have been about people who are not particularly influential at all, so increasing the diversity of our ‘media diet’ shouldn’t be too hard, and there’s plenty of scope to challenge tired racial tropes.

[/quote]I’d have a problem with it happening to any extent really. Pretty much everything that people do non-impulsively first starts out as a mental exercise.

I don’t hate white people but I fear what some of them have risen up and historically done to us

Thinking this through further, I think you’re wasting your time looking for groups to hate. All you really need to concentrate on hating is anti-semitism, because with it you can be victimized even by fellow Jews; without it, you can be surrounded by white people or people of a different religion, and have nothing to fear.

Yes but you were talking about a mythical strawman of minorities censoring you, not an actual reality. Your strawman doesn’t exist in this universe.
