Whatcha Watchin' (Season 2)

This review about The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel makes it clear…

All the discussions around here about DST inspired me to cut my losses on Pieces of Her (even Toni Collette couldn’t save it), and use the free time to watch Vikings: Valhalla instead. Hopefully, choosing “shield wall” for a drinking game will work out better than “Floki” did!

I’m slowly watching Turning Red, the new Pixar cartoon. I’m really enjoying this coming of age story. What I liked the most is that it is told from a female point of view. I’m more used to movies like boy learns life lessons from some eccentric adult or some similar trope. Watching the teen “dramas” (When we were teenagers, everything was hyperbolic and any gaffe means the end of social life, for example. I can assure you it is true), their families relationships and their friendship was very refreshing.

The girls are quite captivating. The multicultural characters are another positive point in this cartoon. The story takes place in Toronto in 2002. I know little about Canada. Is the city so vibrant and with people from all over the world?

Take your daughter (or mother), get some popcorn and enjoy this adventure.

Oh yes, Waititi’s Blackbeard is absolutely brilliant, and so is Rhys Darby’s Stede! It’s obvious that they’re having so much fun with their roles, and it’s really infectous.

As for the “based on a true story” aspect, the best part about that is that the most “out there” bits, the ones that make you think “nah, this is ridiculous, who even thought of this?!” - they’re actually true, like Stede paying his crew a salary.

I decided to watch this show and started with the last season (there are too many episodes and I think I am a little impatient). I was definitely hooked. Cool characters and a cool plot.

The season finale of Star Trek Discovery had a very special guest star. Stacy Abrams as Earth President at the end of the episode.

A great wrap up of the season.

It was a great cameo knowing that she’s a huge fan of Star Trek. It was such a very Trek resolution and i’m all in for that but boy did it take an age to get there across the season. I’m really still not convinced by the visuals mostly but the alien vistas have been excellent and genuinely alien.

Apparently Teddy Cruz is upset over that: https://twitter.com/markberkins/status/1504939462882697225

A friend of mine watched the whole thing in a day yesterday. I asked him about the pacing issue many had with this season and he felt it was non-existent in a binge view. I do wonder if part of DSC (and in a way Picard) pacing issues stem from the week to week release.

Well, the war in Ukraine is making this a chilling thing to watch. Russia maybe has weapons in nearly every country.

It’s well done, good suspenseful drama, but i don’t think I’m going to sleep especially well tonight.

Permanent Midnight was the first hint, but Severance has convinced me that Ben Stiller has been wasted on comedy. Not saying that he wasn’t good at it, just wow his serious stuff is amazing.

It’s one of the best pirate shows about vulnerability ever

Disney has been getting better at that for sure. I notice that several of the recent Disney/Pixar films (including the Frozen movies, Brave, Encanto and now Turning Red) have all been variations on the theme “female protagonist faces coming-of-age struggle while learning to heal intergenerational/family rift.”

Ted realising that the future as depicted by Star Trek has a left wing bias but then he’s never understood what Star Trek means despite professing to being a fan.

I can imagine but some of those latter episodes could easily have been combined to make it feel less like a slog. There is talk of them doing more episodic storytelling next season which I’d like to see and what I’m hoping more from Strange New Worlds. God knows a series like Voyager was crying out for a proper story arc but it should be a mix of both I think.

I personally would love to see more like S4 of Enterprise. Mini-arcs. Lets the story dictate how long each one is.

I just finished watching this and it’s sweet and funny with giant red pandas!!
It does make a nice change to have a coming-of-age/life lessons story focus on a girl for once, and a Chinese Canadian one at that!
