Today I learned a depressing fact: prior to Princess Jasmine, there were only two named female characters of color in the entire animated Disney catalog. One was Princess Tiger Lily in Peter Pan, and the other was Sunflower, the incredibly racist depiction of a black Centaur in the original Fantasia. So it would be pretty dang hard for the company not to do better than they had been doing in the past.
And then this kind of crap is somehow still a thing:
Port Neches-Groves Independent School District drill team marched on Main Street, U.S.A. but their insensitive chant scalded many nerves.
Est. reading time: 4 minutes
Disney claims that the audition tape didn’t reflect the actual performance, and they didn’t allow the team to wear their headdresses, but still, having a drill team called the “Indianettes” perform in the park under any circumstances was a bad idea.
The Four Weddings and Paddington 2 actor sounds like the perfect fit – with equally charming and villainous credentials – if only he wasn’t a huge film star
Fortunately, it just seems like a rumor (from the daily fail), so it might not be true… I mean, he already played him once, for a few seconds… That’s enough.
Go watch Paddington 2, he’s amazing.
Yeah, I know he’s a good actor and all… but… still. Not a fan of him as the Doctor…
He would either be amazing or utterly shite - I’m scared

Right? I’d love it to be Richard Ayoade, if I’m being honest…
Or Michaela Coel…
Ooh, good choices!!
I think both were on the early speculation lists, and I was like YES to both… Maybe they can both play the Doctor at the same time, somehow?
Like, you could just have them switch off, one episode Richard, the next Michaela… no explanation or anything… It would be perfect…
Clearly, I need to be the next Doctor Who show runner! Wanna be head writer!
Right? I’d love it to be Richard Ayoade, if I’m being honest…
Ayoade would be great, but ideally they would have to let him write, too.
An actor who doesn’t seem likely but I think could be fun is Matt King. (“The secret ingredient is time!”)
but ideally they would have to let him write, too.
Oh! Super Hans!
Maybe…
What I worry about is what happened to Lashana Lynch (Nomi in the Bond films), where they touted a new 00 leader but actually put her in the backseat so the white man could come and save the day.
Yeah, but the Doctor is always the Doctor. The nature of the character is such that it’s difficult to write them as anything less than an ancient being who has no problem getting in and out of trouble…
Or Lair of the White Worm (with another Doctor), or An Awfully Big Adventure. Hugh Mungo Grant (yes, his middle name is Mungo) is a much weirder actor than he is usually given credit for. I could see him pulling it off.
Or Michaela Coel…
Oh! She would be great!
As would Matt King…A Doctor that is even more of a nutter than Christopher Eccleston’s!
I would also love to see David Mitchell as The Doctor for a very short arc that as a throwback to the show’s origin tone from the first few seasons (original, not reboot) has a sort of weird edutainment thing going on and two kids as companions. Then he should die in some amusingly awful mishap and regenerate into someone longer term.
