Whatcha Watchin' (Season 2)

I see this was posted 1/20/2020 about the time I watched it. The premonition this show had is now super creepy as the whole plot revolves around a virus being released. J. K. Simmons is a superb actor and I always like to support a protagonist in the bald brotherhood.

Yes, it really did suddenly become very topical.

I had only watched the first season at that point. I thought the second was much better despite James Cromwell’s goofy accent. Mildly disappointed that it was cancelled, but at least the ending doesn’t really leave us hanging. All the important backstory was revealed (brilliantly IMO), all the major plot threads tied up.

Devs.

Alex garland seems to have a knack for making stuff not a lot of people watch and that’s a shame because this is another slice of some hefty sci-fi and i’m kinda smitten with it. I enjoy his work generally anyway but i suppose i could understand why some would find this a bit ponderous, though i would disagree that it is, you just need some patience with it. I wouldn’t ascribe to the subtext of this drama that implies tech companies are omnipotent godlike beings that know our every move and thought, they’re just run by crafty business people that bought out competitors and successfully lobbied for more control through copyright law… But still, if sci-fi is meant to be a document about the present we live in then this really hits the sweet spot. Plus the cast is great, so is the music and there’s some genuinely arresting imagery.

For those with access, it’s available on iplayer at the moment.

I’ve just watched episode one and yes, it’s great but wow - not exactly easy-going. Pacing is fine, it’s just kinda intense.

Ahh… i should have mentioned all episodes are on iplayer, that’s where i’ve been watching it. Yeah, it is intense but also leavened by some much needed humour here and there.

Do you like listening to podcasts? Have you tried to watch one?

I watched and realized that I’m not a fan of podcasts.

I watched about half of the first episode and didn’t care for it, but I’m not sure how much of that was just because I have a lower tolerance for Dr. Drew Pinsky than I used to.

I tried tto pay attention, but all those incessant dialogues left me tired and lost. Maybe it had some interesting insight in the middle of that verbal flow, but I ended up drowning in words.

Season 6 of Bosch is up. First episode seems tangential to current issues.

And @brainspore, are either of you Adventure Time fans? I’m wondering if fans of that show would be more likely to enjoy this more than non-fans.

I am an Adventure Time fan and the visual style of The Midnight Gospel was appropriately fun and weird. I just wasn’t hooked by the pilot, maybe I’d change my mind if I watched a different episode.

Okay. Cool. Thanks.

Olá

It is true, I really like Adventure Time. But this Midnight Gospel is a totally different creature. Adventure Time even had many creative, different, thought-provoking and even crazy ideas diluted in the midst of nonsense situations. But this new cartoon looked like a conversation between two old college friends, drunk at a bar table. An uninterrupted flow of dialogue that I found boring.

But it could be as @brainspore said. Maybe it was that first episode, which I admit, it was the only one that I watched. Maybe I’ll give them another chance.

So less Adventure time and more animated Slacker? Interesting. I’ll have to check it out and see if I agree with you and @brainspore.

It’s like The Ricky Gervais Show, basically they added animation to a pod cast interview show.

The best Star Trek TOS episode:

I have to say, Horse Girl was a strange, compelling film. The ending is sort of ambiguous, but Allison Brie is just fantastic throughout. Would recommend.
