that’s right, I bought my portable killing machine in a sort of dooky brown with red splotches down the sides, I mean it is frankly disgusting looking it grosses me out and makes me sooooo angry that I had to pay so much money for something that looks that bad what the hell, it really uuughhhg damn, makes me want to kill someone is what it does. And hey! Now I got the machine to do it!
This is why I don’t own a gun. More likely I’ll either shoot myself intentionally or accidentally shoot my foot since I don’t know how to even ensure some appliances are off. I just wish folks would treat guns properly rather than just as another toy to have the power of god or whatever over others.
I agree with some of what you say regarding thinking and fantasizing, but you are really going to have to rethink your rabid racoon vs kid scenario.
Considering that oft stated 18% accuracy by the NYPD (older article, but doubtful their accuracy has gone up significantly: http://nation.time.com/2013/09/16/ready-fire-aim-the-science-behind-police-shooting-bystanders/), I don’t know if you are a much better shot, but I would never aim a gun in the general direction of a kid. And then I read that you own a shotgun…are you shooting slugs or buckshot?
Please consider buying a heavy duty Nerf gun for your stated reason.
Ooh, that’s actually a reasonable suggestion. The larger battery powered Nerf guns really kinda hurt at close range. [Full disclosure: I have an 8 year old boy and a 44 year old sorta-almost-kinda grown up at home - therefore, enough Nerf guns to fill an armory.]
I’m officially leaving that typo.
Since you asked: there were instances of NRA helping set up chapters being set up in the south during the 60s. There was the high profile case of Otis McDonald vs Chicago which the NRA’s legislative branch was part of. Spokesman Colion Noir has a regular voice through the NRA and has comments I know on Castile as well as being a proponent of Marissa Alexander who was incarcerated despite using a gun to ward off her abusive husband. I believe I mentioned before, but the very first interaction I had directly with an NRA representative was a black man in Independence running a table at a show who was the first person to expose me to some of the history of past laws.
And most recently they gave nearly an hour for Colion Noir and Killer Mike to talk about gun rights and how it relates to black people. IIRC he made similar comments in a shorter interview on the Daily Show (I can dig up links.) While I agree there are probably racists within the org, I disagree labeling the whole org as such. And to paraphrase Killer Mike, “We may not agree on other issues, but we agree on this one and they are the people helping protect my rights.” He also talks about how important that right is to black people and how it has protected them in the past. I realize this is an appeal to authority using his arguments, but he has a lot more credibility in this area than I do.
I do agree they should be more vocal on individual defense instances and violations of rights, life, and liberty. But typically they don’t often focus on the small instances, rather the large cases and legislation being passed.
Well said.
Anything since almost all of us here were born?
I’m in a better place at the moment, makes reflection easier. Thanks though, all the best to you too.
His comment gets into a handful of recent things immediately after that.
You’ve got a good point in that those earlier actions were before the current crazy status of the NRA came into being.
Currently the NRA seems to mostly mention non-white gun owners as a fig leaf for trying to convince liberals that all gun laws are bad. Sort of the way the anti-choice movement like to point at high abortion rates in African American communities as proof that abortion is “racist”.
That said there are black NRA members and there are people in the NRA that are concerned about these issues for non-insane reasons. But it’s important to point out the NRA leadership and central organization is deeply disconnected and often unconcerned with its membership.
The org that couldn’t be bothered to make a statement when Philando Castille was murdered? Yeah I’m sure they’ve seen the light.
Is “entertaining a fantasy” neutral in terms of desire that the fantasy becomes reality? I’ve always interpreted the phrase as having an optimistic connotation, which isn’t at all how I interpreted YetiLives’ comment.
Along these very same lines, I’m inclined to interpret “exciting” as neutral on the positive/negative emotion scale. For example:
Coworker: “…and then we found a rabid raccoon in the house!”
Me: “I bet that was exciting!”
Coworker: “No, it was horrible!”
Ooh, color me “impressed;” how many bullets did that token gesture stop?
(Do yourself a favor and don’t reply to that; anything you come up with will likely only piss me off. )
My people are DYING in droves -
At the hands of police, at the hands of bigots, and most tragically of all, by our own hands… and the NRA doesn’t give a happy fuck about us… or about you, for that matter. Their profit margin is the only thing they care about, and no one will ever be able to convince me otherwise.Any loss of human life isn’t a “small instance;” sorry.
And I don’t want to have this cyclical, ‘hamster-wheel’ conversation with you, yet again; it never goes anywhere, and it never will.
Please fall back and address someone else if you want to continue discussing your favorite topic.
I really want to just give you a calm, quiet hug right now.
Thanks for being brave and honest and fighting hard for yourself (even when you think you’re not fighting, you are, 'cause you’re still here with us.)
so much this.
I prefer the Hello AK-15 (or is it AR-47?)
Have you trained at target shooting bears, wolves, etc? or do you expect to be attacked by a quarry?
Ford was a visionary.
…blanket sense.
Yeah that’s why I said “shootout.” About 2/3 of firearm deaths are suicides, IIRC…
In her case… the ever popular in the 50’s “Surf Green”.
Just wait until the Great Pumpkin gets here. Then you’ll pay. Then you’ll ALL pay.
And? They’re still dead.
The success rate for suicide attempts by gun are much higher than for other methods. And there are some indications that attempts are more likely/happen more often with access to a gun. It’s suspected that the convenience factor involved is to blame. Alcohol is a much bigger factor is such attempts than other suicide methods too boot.
Killing yourself by hanging or with sleeping pills or auto exhaust. Or by jumping. Requires fore thought and planning. Lot of opportunity to have second thoughts. More opportunity for people to intervene. If it comes to it it’s just a less reliable way to off yourself. Even the whole slit wrists thing, which is often impulsive. Is not a reliable death.
Access to a gun makes it trivial to really kill the Fuck out of your self during a particularly bad moment.
Why I’m not sure whether I’ll store my gun in the house (I’m not the only gun owner living there) but it’s also part of why there are no bullets in the building.
