I’ve been saying a lot of this rhetoric is overblown, that we’ll never really become a real fascist state. But I’ve lately been thinking about how Apartheid worked, and how it could be implemented here, and how easily a minority can hold all of the power.
Just a few small steps. We have already taken some of them.

I would say we are closer to being a kleptocratic state. Endemic corruption and graft eating away at our liberties, economy and democratic institutions.
Racism being profitable because it gets poor/working class people to vote against their economic interests in other ways. Those people who want to attack the civil liberties of various minorities also attack organized labor, support deregulation, support privatization, and attack social benefits as “socialism”.

Exactly. Mostly Christian, mostly blue-collar workers, largely big-time supporters of “traditional family values,” the demographic forecasts should have been a conservative political strategist’s dream come true. Republicans were even starting to make a few inroads via the Bushes, who actually have some legit cred in the Latino community.
But racism is one helluva drug.

White Americans abandoned democracy and embraced authoritarianism when they realized brown people would soon outvote them
I believe that by evidence of actual practice, said Americans ignored democracy when convenient and embraced authoritarianism even before blacks got the vote.

Yes, there is the racism, but many in the GOP are taking Trump’s cue (by growing political necessity FOR THEM) and using the aforementioned immigrants as targets of hate to whip up their base (hence courting going out the window). See @TobinL for ‘duh’ filing on my logic!
