White Culture

It is the presence of a lower caste, those lower by their mental and physical organization, controlled by the higher intellect of the white man, that gives this superiority to the white laborer. Menial services are not there performed by the white man. We have none of our brethren sunk to the degradation of being menials. That belongs to the lower race—the descendants of Ham.
-Jefferson Davis

Centuries of the idea that one’s status is built on there being a caste beneath them, has produced a culture built around one’s worth stemming from denigrating and increasing the suffering of others. When that makes one’s own life worse, then the lives of others must suffer even more so. Trump and his cohort further expose the white american id – We are great because there are those so far beneath us, and their suffering proves it.

This was a comment I read elsewhere: “Its tough to talk to white people about white privilege, because it means admitting that they are playing the game of life on the “easy” setting and still losing.”

Pretty much sums it up.

Can we please have this version of Southern culture be the accepted version? I love his outro. “Don’t go away mad, just go away.”

…which is why you usually shouldn’t start that conversation with specifically white privilege.

Nearly everybody is disprivileged on one axis or another; wealth, class, gender, sexuality, education, whatever. Start with that, then onto intersectionality (just take what they began with then add another axis, show how that person is doubly fucked, then on from there), and work around to race as one of many aspects of oppression.

And then you get into the often more difficult bit, of demonstrating (a) the relative intensity of the various aspects in modern US society, and (b) the need for universal solidarity rather than narrow self-interest in order to defeat oppression for all.

Sure, if you mean white Southern culture.

Sorry, but that’s a sore spot for me, the way “Southern” so often means “white Southern.” Which ignores other cultures in “the South,” let alone their intermixing.

Well, it is a southern white dude, but I suppose I should be more specific.

Just an update on one of the drivers of this manifestation of white culture;

Ed’s a journalist withe the Torygraph, I don’t know him but he seems okay from his feed. Maybe he needs to leave that shitty racist rag.

Oh, look. They’re everywhere.

The calm lying. The assurance that she holds the power here. Here absolute certainty that he can’t be the property owner. This is scary to watch.

Sometimes white privilege is the context. Can’t build up to it because the conversation starts with “hey, dude, check your privilege!”

“I’m not privileged! I have [something something] happen to me all the time, and I’m white!”

“But do you have [something] happen to you because you’re white or because you’re being an asshole?”

“…”

Ugh.

I’d probably go out of my way to speak to them in uber-chipper “Fake Neighbor-ese” every time I saw them in the neighborhood after that; “Hi, Bigot Lisa! Hi, Bigot Robert!

ETA:

She’s already been doxxed, and is about to reap the whirlwind as the perp apparently owns some scammy-ass skin care company that uses Birch Box.

Buh-bye, Bigot Lisa’s income stream…

Slightly OT, but one of my daughter’s got Birch Box for a year as a gift, and I think may still order from the occasionally. Is there something about the company we should know?

edited to add: I’ve now read far enough into the comment thread that I have the answer. Her company’s product(s) were offered by Birch Box. My guess is, not for much longer.

The pressure will soon be on Birch Box to drop her line, if it isn’t already; if they refuse, then yes… it might be time to look for a new supplier.

According to a couple of posters, they’ve gotten individual responses from BirchBox stating that they’ve dropped the line due to the racism.

Yay!

That must be what gives her skin that “I’ve used 13 shades of white paint to try to color-match this wall and I’ve given up” effect.

And afterward? I’d so love to see the encounter if she did call the cops.

But then, I guess not, since we know how that usually goes, when a black man and a white woman are involved. :expressionless:
