I was not familiar with Senator Scott or his party affiliation. After looking up his Wikipedia entry, I see that he’s a member in good standing of the “Chickens for Col. Sanders” caucus of the GOP.

In that context, I don’t think Cross’s characterisation of the indomitable Ms. Tubman is quite fair. One can’t leave behind someone who refuses to go because’s content being in thrall to his oppressors. If she would have left Scott behind, it wouldn’t have been for lack of trying to persuade him.

I can think of several self-hating Black public figures who would have not only been “left behind,” but they likely would have been ‘neutralized’ prior to any actual attempt to escape, just to insure their silence.
