You’re acting as if there’s something that precludes fascists and bigots from participating in scientific discussions and inserting their poison into otherwise rational and fact-based discourse. There isn’t.

Wow, you went from asking what Twitter was useful for to telling everyone how it works really fast. Maybe you should have spent a bit longer on the listening step before you became an expert on it.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about robustness of social systems - with the systems in place, how many dickheads does it take to topple a good thing? I remember noticing, a decade ago, how one thread with about 20 participants was being blown up and monopolized by a MRA jerk. Lone guy, with a lonely opinion, but he produced about 1/3 the comments in the thread. It became clear to me that day: the good parts of social media were really vulnerable to dickheads with too much time on their hands. And I noticed over the following years what various social media companies did, or didn’t do, to address this.

Same. I had no appreciation for how hard it is to maintain good things, and how easy it is to topple them. Which also makes me appreciate how many decent people there are in the world, so there’s that.

Which may overlap with social media but much of it does not.

I have never garnered a single piece of news from social media.

By not using social media.

Social media ≠ news
