Women forbidden from entering Starbucks in Saudi Arabia

Yup.

Which is why any business with the slightest hint of ethical management would refuse to set up shop in a totalitarian theocracy.

The Saudi ruling class are scum. But so are those who collaborate with them in search of profit.

All of those things are true.

They’re also completely irrelevant to this issue.

OTOH, if some idiot were to start arguing that this sort of state-enforced misogyny was a uniquely Islamic thing, then the history of comparative levels of civilisation between the Christian and Islamic spheres might be relevant.

No such thing: you’re either a part of your father’s family or your husband’s family.

The symbolism of the female siren (who is, presumably, wearing the tiara we see) being submerged below the water is probably lost on the trendy male Saudi patrons.

You joke, but the Taliban used to beat up women walking outside during Ramadan, because they had caused impure thoughts. I’m using the past tense because I read about this years ago, but I’m sure there are places in the Islamic world where this happens to this day.

I’m still outraged that they don’t offer a purple cup during Christmas, what with purple being the liturgical color of the season.

It is only said jokingly to keep me from knocking off work for the rest of the day and drinking out of the fact that shit does happen and it makes me very sad that it does.

It would speed up the renovation work quite a bit, I’d imagine.

Stardoe?

Maybe. Although to complete the work, they would likely need to enter the restaurant. So I guess they need to hire an all-female construction crew.

I think it’s (quite understandably) difficult for people in liberal democracies to grok societies with modern-day dark age mentalities towards women.

I don’t think we can pat ourselves on the back just yet. It is still frustratingly common for a small group of adult women to walk into a restaurant or bar only to hear “are you girls alone?”.

Oh, I agree. In fact, while I was typing that, I wondered if it would be as difficult for an even more egalitarian society to grok ours.

Oh, huge fan. /s

Re-reading my post, didn’t write that bit well, at all. I don’t like the fact that the author of the tweet linked it to #blackhistorymonth (and segregation with the image), Both issues are huge on their own and trying to link them together in my mind just seems like lazy pandering.

If it was close to St. Patricks day, I feel like they would have gone with ‘no irish allowed’ instead. Something like this doesn’t need a on-point-topical-cultural reference. But, granted, buzzfeed makes a whole lot more money than I do, so I am probably wrong.

“Saudi” Arabia is the worst. Good thing that they’re the United States best friend, though! What a positive influence they’ve been.

Stardough would actually make for a really good bakery, I’d say!

Generally called the muttawa, at least that was the nice thing we called them in Riyadh. I’m fairly observant, and I never saw one of those fuckers being nice to old ladies or chatting with the skateboard punks–they appear to me, now, as Ted Cruz in a green jumpsuit, baton at the ready and scaring some taxi drivers off the sidewalk for [doesn’t matter].

If I didn’t already boycott Starbucks for making shitty, insipid coffee, I’d boycott them.
