I grew up drinking eggnog without booze and never understood the trope of it being spiked until my 40s when I finally encountered it being a thing at Christmas parties. Seriously, it wasn’t a thing where I grew up despite people drinking cheap beer like it was water and literally downing schnapps (every goddamn flavor, not just peppermint) straight. I like boozy eggnog and still drink the stuff straight.
I’ve also been introduced to coquito at the holidays by Puerto Rican transplant (i.e. New Yorkers and Floridians that are a generation or so from PR) friends, which is also creamy and boozy. It’s how I decided boozy egg nog wouldn’t be weird.
Hell, like The Dude, I have enjoyed White Russians for years.
That said, I’m kind of meh on this thing. I’d try it as a bit, but something tells me it’s probably not great.
I feel like this kind of thing sounds decent in theory (bacon and waffles with maple syrup that’s been aged in bourbon barrels is drool) but ends up being either too cloyingly sweet, too chemically tasting, or both.
that’s fair – and i agree. they are the same, but different. now that i’ve had the real thing, i much prefer it, but if someone offered me a glass of store nog at a party, it’s not like i’d turn it down.
They were much better when the center was a gooey, sticky mess! I still like the modern, desiccated ones, though. Nowadays I can get a box of three dozen around Easter, which satisfies my cravings for a few months.
