No. I don’t want to proceed. But thank you for giving me permission.
I wasn’t addressing the OP’s position or even disagreeing with Thebarton_Gamer’s opinion. I made a comment about the general snarkiness of the comment. Someone’s argument should stand on its own merits. Resorting to stereotyping (yes, new BB poster = trolley) does nothing to further a position. Making assumptions about why some joined in the discussion isn’t a valid response. “Hello new person WHO* had to join…” is snarky to me, but maybe it gives you the warm fuzzies. I think BB readers and BB comment threads deserve better.
Is not the comparison between the music and sports fans both germane and cogent?
Seeing any group of people lose both their sense of agency and self control whilst screaming and frothing at the actors on a stage of play is troubling.
What’s understandably different about the two groups is that one is drawn from individuals who are in their hormonal-developmental stage and the other consists mostly of adults trying to indoctrinate their children into a world of misplaced loyalty and extracurricular violence, centred (sometimes tangentially) around a group of people try to make a ball go over a line.
There is an invitation to mockery from both groups, it’s just that you have to be a total dick to insult young people because of their compulsive obsessions. Just… roll your eyes and be done with it.
(NB: DO NOT roll your eyes at a sports fan out after the game, celebrating/commiserating their sports-ball team’s win/loss.)
Chris Rock:
“Don’t you think it’s kind of odd that a grown woman is still into Cinderella?”
Rosario Dawson’s response:
“Don’t you think it’s kind of odd that a grown man is still into the Yankees?”
I like Wil Wheaton. he’s a good actor and a good writer, too. [edited to add] And that whole mini-arc I linked to is hilarious. I love Something Positive (as evidenced by my avatar).
So, you got to be an over emotional teenager, but these kids don’t?
And have you not seen adult football fans (or both variety of football)? Or British football fans, who riot? Men (and women) fucking RIOT over their team winning or losing. It happens all the time. Hell, in the case of the Balkans, it was football teams who turned into the soldiers in various militias in the 90s…
Not nearly as much as they used to. 25 dead in football riot in Egypt. Teams asking the league to be suspended due to violence in Turkey. The far-right racism endemic in Russian football and the associated violence causing critical matches to be abandoned. And those are only from the last couple of months.
