You can already choose a new health plan under the American Health Care Act

This is my plan for when my dog “The Dude” dies. Afterwards I’m going bowling.

If anything that’s more a matter of challenging cultural norms than a failure of the social safety net. A lot more families go bankrupt paying for medical care than mortuary care.

I do think it would be a nice idea to have the government guarantee the cost of a basic cremation service while allowing families the freedom to pay for more expensive alternatives as they saw fit.

I’m not arguing healthcare is less important or the funeral industry and politics are broken worse, I simply said my opinion that I hate an unnecessary predatory luxury industry more than an bloated and inefficient industry that is necessary. Hell, even the “cultural norms” took lengthy collusion in the industry and a lot of lobbying at the state level - a lot like the wedding industry.

I don’t hate most people involved in healthcare, and the worst aspects are more finance related which is a while other bag of dicks. Modern day patent medicine is probably the part I hate most as a concept that is directly related to healthcare.

You can tell it isn’t real because they spelled “AHCA” correctly.

My son and I are on Medicaid*, specifically the Healthy Michigan Plan**, and we get reminded every six months or so that we can choose from six to eight different insurance companies.

*Thanks for paying your taxes, folks, if you indeed did so.

**This refers to health-insurance coverage only, not the general state of the state of Michigan, and specifically Flint.

And put it this way: I’d rather deal with the insurance company over the “State” (meaning MI and federal) when it comes to bureaucratic nonsense. For one thing, state bureaucrats are practically appointed/hired in for life, and they know it; the insurance company is worried mostly about money, not people keeping their jobs, so they appear to be easier to resolve issues with that the state. But there are some issues, of course, that have to be dealt with exclusively with one or the other, not either one.

“ACHA” wasn’t the acronym, it was someone stifling a sneeze from a pre-existing condition.

I told my kids to put me in a tupperware container after I kick the bucket. But your idea is much better. I am changing my final resting place to a half empty bottle of Arrogant Bastard Ale.

Alas, when people are grieving, they are extremely susceptible to the subtle pressures of expert morticians. “Oh, dear, your late sainted grandmother would be so hurt if you don’t upgrade to the Super De-Luxe Walnut Ever-Love with Mahogany Trim, Gold Accessories, Velvet Appointments, and Stereo.” They’re worse than used car salesmen.

Maybe it was just the luck of the draw but that didn’t seem to be the case when any of my relatives or my wife’s relatives passed away. As far as I can recall everyone ended up either a pile of ashes in a glorified tin can of an urn (two of which are occupying space in our garage) or buried in an inexpensive particleboard/felt casket. I suppose it’s possible the morticians just pegged our families as cheapskates on sight and decided the normal sales pitches would be a waste of time.

Or possibly they were just letting slip the next phase of their alien agenda a bit too early - the “Annihilation of Carbon-based Humanoids Act.”

What the heck is a picture of all those Swedes doing on a post about American health care?

Oh. I get it.

If someone would go so far as to pay for a cardboard coffin burial, then for additional savings I’d suggest a plain old discarded one that was used to box up a bookcase or something. You could snag one of those for free from a dumpster behind Walmart. Problem solved.

Which reminds me: anybody recommend a good teeth whitener? Mine don’t seem to fluoresce.

My mom’s ashes are contained in what looks like a U.S. Army-issued ammo tin, only it’s made of black plastic. On the label, I expect to see “REMAINS, HUMAN FEMALE, CAUCASIAN”, with her birth and death dates as the “DATE OF MANUFACTURE” and “EXPIRATION DATE”, respectively on the label.
