So do they look like that in person, or only when photographed?
I really like the “rolling” cubes one. I’d keep it as a functioning desk toy if it weren’t a spinny-sharp-edged finger hazard. I wouldn’t be able to stop myself from touching it.
To see the effect in person, you’d have to view them lit by strobe lights, or alternately, place them within traditional zoetrope drums. Some of what you see in the video involves changing the spinning speed relative to the frame rate, and you couldn’t do that with the usual drum zoetrope (where the frame count is set by the number of slits in the drum), but you can get the full effect with strobe lights.
What a tremendous ability to visualize a concept all the way through to a very fruitful conclusion. It’s like watching Muybridge’s horse movie for the first time. I also really like the rolling cubes on as well for some reason.
I’m saving these for the next time I run Changeling: The Lost as visuals for Hedge Fruit.
