I recall installing some DOS program in the late 80’s that let me shop for electronics at ~9600 baud… Don’t recall the company, though.
Maybe Sears and Prodigy? I know they had such an app
There was also an early episode of “This American Life” about two people that had actually met through on-line dating, and the episode had a painstaking explanation of how that worked.
