There’s really very little mystery whatsoever.

The guy’s features clearly mark him as a genetic descendent of the victims of the Tatar yoke. Also, some of the letters are formed by someone who learned to write script in Cyrillic first. (Such as the ‘W’ that could be an “M”). It’s more likely someone trying to write a W, and then accidentally falling into the muscle memory for a “ж” (zh).

Australia was absolutely overrun with Soviet spies in the late 40s. I’d say either America, the U.K, or Australian counterintelligence took him out, and didn’t feel like publicizing the affair.
