modern dictionaries allow for the new usage:
ugh, I know, “modern dictionaries,” right? they’ll allow anything these days. however, my Mirriam-Webster’s Collegiate, Tenth Ed. is probably of an '80s vintage (my dog ate the first few pages–no, really,) and its note on usage shows that the definition was transitioning to how this post’s citation used it, referencing use by Steinbeck, Theroux, and The New Republic in this way.
however, if you’re British, I don’t imagine Webster, Steinbeck, or The New Republic hold a lot of water with you
