And if those Republicans had attempted to run on the Democratic ticket they wouldn’t have been elected at all. So those Republican Presidents’ “electability” was inextricably linked to the path they took to the White House.
Biden was broke going into SC and if he owes anyone for his current viability it’s not the establishment - it’s African American voters. He doesn’t even have the cash to run any ads on Super Tuesday.
He - and others - would do well to remember that. And to not denigrate that power.

In that respect it can be a healthy thing in a democracy for politicians to “owe” something to their constituents. Especially in contrast to politicians who owe their viability to lobbyists like the Koch brothers or ultra-wealthy people like Bloomberg who presumably doesn’t feel like he owes anyone at all.
