2020 Election Thread (formerly: 2020 Presidential Candidates Thread) (Part 1)

She’s the kind of charismatic up-and-comer that, if not for her progressivism, the party would make a featured speaker as preview for her own run at the presidency. Now they’ve essentially handed her time to Republicans.

The headline speakers are Sanders, Michelle Obama, and Kasich. I assume the idea is that they have the progressive wing covered with Sanders.

Kasich is mainly there to tell republicans to not be terrified of Biden.

I mean in the end Kasich spoke for just under four minutes. Sanders spoke for a bit over 8. So it was kinda a storm in a teacup.

I think that was just the set up to get to all those “regular people” saying “I voted for him - and I just can’t do it again”. Those are the voices that may resonate with people on the other side who have buyers remorse. And even less that they’ll vote for a Dem than maybe they just sit it out. If you knock his base down 2% - he can’t get back from it.

It also reinforced the absolutely devastating Kristin Urquiza.

No, it isn’t. As governor of Ohio, Kasich was anti-women, anti-worker, anti-LGBT. He doesn’t share the values Democrats claim to value and honor. So why should he have been given any time to speak at an event that’s supposedly about presenting the platform for the next four years? He damn well doesn’t speak for me, or anything I want the Democrats to achieve. It’s a slap in the face of the Progressive wing of the party.

The enemy of our enemy is not our friend.

And just when the party needs young, progressive voters. Sanders counterbalanced it somewhat with his speech, but really we can do without these futile attempts by the party establishment to get “moderate” Republican voters to vote for Biden.

But… but… BIG TENT! /s

Seriously, Kasich shouldn’t have been invited…

I don’t think getting moderate republican voters to vote for Biden is nearly as important as getting those voters to not vote against Biden. The antipathy towards HRC on the right wing was a hugely significant part of 2016.

I guess we know the reason why over the air broadcasters aren’t showing much of the democrats’ convention. They don’t want to air 2 hours of racist uncle facebook rants.

They should air it, the cowards. Let people see what they’re really doing over there in the GOP.

There’s a hubbub around about the DNC allegedly dropping language about eliminating fossil fuel subsidies from the final draft. I guess we’ll have to wait and see with the final draft, but I wouldn’t get too excited. My suspicion is that it’s a clerical error:

Basically: In the approved Manager’s Mark the line about fossil fuel subsidies is accidentally duplicated (see above). My suspicion/hope is that the correction is just the removal of one of the two lines, not both of them.

I thought last night went well for Biden. And again is a human approach that will just be beyond both Trump and the GOP to match.

Though I will admit this made me laugh.

American amnesia at its most sickening. There’s virtually no national memory of Powell having played such a critical, lying role in the devastation of Iraq.

Security… fucking hell…

More like “murderous empire bona fides.”

Consigning Ocasio-Cortez, the biggest young star the Democrats have, to a mere minute of airtime is further evidence that those who control the Democratic party hope to marginalize the leftists who seek radical and necessary change.
