2020 Election Thread (formerly: 2020 Presidential Candidates Thread) (Part 1)

Aaaaaand Beto is OUT. Good. But he SHOULD run for Senate, and he won’t. Goofball.

You mean we aren’t?

Even as a joke it makes no sense. Which is a special kind of fail because he claims to be an economics professor, and he’s joking about economics. His own field. And he can’t explain concepts from his own field, even through humor, in a way that’s even remotely accurate.

CNN Poll Finds Support For Democratic Nominee Joe Biden Has Skyrocketed 2 Points Downward

He kinda ruined his brand for that with this lackluster run.

Dried up donations likely too. You can only ask the same people so many times in a year.

Interesting take

If Biden flames out, I suspect most of his support will go to Buttigieg. And if Mayor Pete gets the nomination, it’ll likely be the same outcome as if Biden did: Il Douche getting a second term.

That article, written by a progressive, seems to be urging “moderate centrist” Dems to go with a sure loser against Warren or Sanders if they can’t stick with Biden, but I don’t know if they’re going to take the bait.

Honestly, Amy is a better option over Pete & Joe when it comes to the more moderate candidates. The folks much further to the left have significantly more respect for her than the other two guys. Plus she doesn’t have nearly as much baggage as Biden does

I deeply appreciate Pete and am glad he’s running, but this isn’t his year. He’ll make a wonderful VP or Secretary of Something, but it’s getting close to having-meetings-with-the-actual-candidates time.

Politics aside, Klobuchar isn’t quick enough for a presidential campaign. Speaking as an ex-Minnesotan, you can’t extrapolate from a candidate’s popularity in Minnesota to the general public. She’s only doing as well in Iowa polling as she is because she finally had a decent debate (she was terrible in the previous two), and because she’s from a neighboring state so a known commodity.

I agree with @nungesser that Pete isn’t really running for President this term; I think he can leverage this run to become Indiana’s governor at some point. However, I think he would have a much better chance at beating Trump than Klobuchar.

As for where Biden’s supporters will go, I have no idea; I wish Pew would do another poll on this. Many of his strongest supporters are African-American, who lump him with Obama, I can’t see them getting excited as a group about Pete.

Isn’t Biden beating Trump in polling?

Yes. Which is part of my point.

When it comes to complacent Dem establishment candidates who believe it’s “my turn, my turn”, I’m not inclined to take a “this time it’ll be different” view.

The real question is: who’ll bring out the younger voters? Mayor Pete would do better in that category than Biden, but he’s not going to inspire them like the progressive candidates offering real change from the neoliberal default will.

Pete B.'s whole civics-class optimism schtick is exhausting and tedious, and all he’s proven is that a gay politician can take tech money and health-insurance money just as well as a straight one.

Biden and Klobuchar and Pete B. are all saying things are fine but for Trump; I cannot and will not back a candidate that myopic or oblivious. 2020 Dems need to run on big systemic change – not small-ball incrementalism or small-demographic purity points (’… Men get pregnant, too!’) – or they will lose, and they will deserve to. Go after suburban wine moms or twitter-complainers and the Dems will lose; give a great number of people something real to vote for and the Dems will win.

My hope of Mayor Pete figuring out a way to make a graceful exit by ending things on a high note seems to be naive; he not only seems determined to fight until forced to flame out, but now claims that the race is just down to himself and Warren, somehow.

He’s hoping that Biden will screw up massively and that he’ll get those votes. It’s not unlikely, but at this point in time it’s counting his chickens before they’re even eggs.
