2020 Election Thread (formerly: 2020 Presidential Candidates Thread) (Part 1)

Student loans are a way of funneling money from low- and middle-income people to the banking industry.

The accounting of state support for higher ed depends on how you measure. In total appropriations it hasn’t monotonically decreased:

Per-student however it has decreased monotonically, reflecting increased enrollment overall in public higher education:

Important, though - and underscoring my concern above that it is not just a federal problem - is that the way universities are funded varies widely from state to state (not only level, but composition):

At least Inslee was doing it to make noise about climate change and not (just) because he was yet another white guy with an overloaded ego. Too bad the system is so stacked in favor of the status quo that even a sitting governor running essentially a single-issue campaign can just be willfully ignored because his issue is inconvenient.

His ending his campaign is immaterial, but declining to run for Senate is unfortunate. He could very well flip that seat, which would be nice. Oh well.

Yes - both he an Beto put their egos ahead of the country. Even if they didn’t win a Senate seat - the would have made them very competitive - upping Dem turnout in those states & making the opposition exend resources that they now won’t have to - and reallocate elswhere.

I can’t speak for black voters but I can say that my older Mexican aunties are absolutely Biden backers.

CNN didn’t give much in the way of analysis, but I’m suspecting a heavy dose of “We’ve been around long enough to know this country, even liberals, are racist and mysogynistic as fuck. Biden is the best we’re going to get.” My wife is not old, but also not white, and she hangs her head and says about the same in these trying times.

McCain kept pushing, however, telling the senator, “Part of the problem, though, is that I think there was an idea that Democrats have gotten out over their skis with Mueller and that the American public and, you know, because you live in the real world and you represent, you know, a Midwestern state, that people are so inundated with so much information that they just think it’s a witch hunt, and that’s why Nancy Pelosi was hesitant to go through with it. So do you worry about Democrats getting over their skis a bit?”

Without hesitation, Klobuchar responded, “No. Because I see what just happened in Kentucky, and what just happened in Virginia and what just happened in Louisiana where we had Democratic candidates win. In fact, in two of the states, Kentucky and Louisiana, Donald Trump had been there the night before.”

“I guess what I want to know is, where can we send him next?” Klobuchar asked with a smile.

Okay, Klobuchar, I’ll vote for you. (But, seriously, you should drop out)

Oh Meghan, I find it so hard to listen to a person like you, someone who’s almost always “over their skis.”
