2020 Election Thread (formerly: 2020 Presidential Candidates Thread) (Part 1)

We can certainly agree on the electoral college and the effects of the 2-party system, though the current situation in the UK and ongoing issues in other European countries show that multiple parties do not lead to perfection. However, that is the situation we have, and we can’t afford to wait for major structural change there. Minor changes, like reforms at the state level, are a clear improvement. Likewise the established tradition of positive process reform and improvement that the DNC has embraced continuously since it abandoned smoke-filled rooms in the 1960s, with one major sleazy hiccup in 2016.

Possibly I’m wrong about the value of direct democracy like town halls and the Iowa walking caucus, but there are clear established processes for changing their use, and contrary to some narratives people like Biden do not have the power or authority to block those changes if rank-and-file Democrats want to make them.

he’s to the left of every currently possible republican replacement for trump, and . . . sure, if he’s the nominee i’ll vote for him next november but he’s not my number one pick by any means, or even my number two or three.

That’s the appeal of Mayor Pete for privileged older white Dems who are worried that Biden will screw the pooch but who still want to maintain the status quo – Buttigieg will deliver what Biden would, plus they can award themselves gold stars for being “woke” enough to consider a gay man worthy of their support.

God, I still can’t get over the gall of the people who were mad at her for not retiring during Obama’s second term, even after McConnell had made it crystal clear with Garland that he would not allow Obama to fill her seat with a replacement appointment. The woman’s smarter than every one of her critics put together.

If I had made that graphic I would have written “die” instead of “retire.”

In answer to an apparently rhetorical question: because you’re not rich, so he doesn’t really give a shit about you.

Case in point: he walked past Harvard Square every day for years and somehow didn’t notice the homeless people.

[ETA: This is a video of a protestor trespassing in someone’s private home to protest Pete Buttigieg’s fundraiser. It’s posted on Twitter in response to the “Pete called the cops on us” story to show, I think, why calling the cops might be justified.]

You’d never know Bernie Sanders was running if you watch CBS, outside of Colbert’s show anyway:

Sanders placed third in the WBUR poll with 15%.

Based on the Twitter thread (obv. I have no direct knowledge), it’s a Pete protestor trespassing in the private home that was hosting the Pete fundraiser.
