By coincidence, I still have 30+ silver 10 € coins. I was planning to just put them into my account, but now I wonder if I should hold on them in case I ever want to make the same gesture.

OTOH. it’s 300 €. Anyone know of a pure silver coin that’s noticeably cheaper?

This feels like where people pretend the Confederacy was all about state’s rights and tariffs, they just used slavery as a way to build support. It’s whitewashing. The Nazis had Aryan supremacy, Lebensraum, and anti-Semitism at the very center of their ideology. Yeah, they killed Germans too – mostly particular groups – but they went to a lot of trouble to commit genocide based on all that. I am trying to think why someone would want to equivocate that away and nothing at all good comes to mind.

There’s a good chance the recipient isn’t going to take them, like this guy didn’t. Plus, 30 pieces of silver is a large amount, that’s kind of the point of the story. You’re showing that you care about something more important than money.

I understand your point. Yes, that’s a valid concern. Thanks for letting me know, I will keep in mind next time when I try to make a point regarding this matter.

Racism is indeed a huge point of these ideologies and they took it seriously. It is a core element.

But they will compromise it on an individual basis as soon as it suits their needs and they will find multiple rationales to exclude the people who, by the blood-logic belong to a protected class, but do not conform the same ideology. Or will create “honorary” Aryans or fictional ethnicities to include some they find useful.

Bullshit.

ETA: If you really think that Nazis were just seeking out some kind of generic ethnic group to hang their policies on, go reread Mein Kampf. Pretty specific to one group.

Hmm. I find 30 various estimates for, but the lowest one seems to be 5 weeks of wages. So I guess I’ll keep them in case I ever need to diss a Belarusian ambassador and will risk it.

See my reply to chenille. Yes, they do care about ethnicity when they create their ideology to group people into “self” and “other”. So the “don’t really care care” was so badly phrased that it’s solidly in the “that’s wrong” camp. Or “bullshit”, as you put it.

But they will find multiple excuses to ignore ethnicity when they need to exclude people who by their own “logic” are “the good people” whom they allegedly are protecting.

Perhaps that’s a better take? They don’t really care about protecting people of their ethnicity.

Once the fascists create the “Other,” it becomes very easy for them to say, “By the way, these people are (or were if already dead) on the side of the Other.” It starts with a racial or ethnic group (or several) and then naturally expands to anyone the fascists don’t like.

Yes, that was my point. “[Russian using Russians as humans shields] What the actual fuck?”

That’s imho utterly unsurprising. To be surprised by it is understandable, but it’s not really surprising.

Facism needs “the other” and if it ever should run out, it either has to create new ones or everyone will be dead.

Sure, nationalist othering is a long tradition that surely predates written history. Sometimes though the choice of group is pretty specific and not at all generic, as my relatives have observed over the past few thousand years (and over dinner just a few days ago).

This makes me kind of sad. One of my favorite Russian rock musicians (Sergei Shnurov, formerly of the Russian punk band Leningrad) is carrying water for Putin, or so says Haaretz:

Shnurov has a long record of thumbing his nose at authority:

Just this week he dropped a new song targeting oligarchs. So if Haaretz is right – and the video they mention seems to confirm it – that’s a disappointment. Time to do some playlist cleansing.
