Good to see that an investigative group led by Alexi Navalny is still able to function even though he’s been jailed by Putin and just sentenced to even more prison time.

Re Super Yacht

Interesting bit about a mysterious crew swap in the middle of the night:

Good article!

The port is lined with designer shops and a magnet for Russian tourists who flock to Forte dei Marmi resort, which hosts around 500 Russian “regulars” each summer, according to the local tourist board, which says most have cancelled for the upcoming season. In 2010, the residents petitioned to stop Russians from pushing out the locals, but in the end, the Russian Ruble won out and most of the port workers speak enough Russian to accommodate the numerous Russian yachts that are docked there most of the long Italian summers.

Yes, one more place where the Russian Ruble won out.

That phenomenon is getting rooted out and exposed in some ways now in the UK. Funny how it’s pretty much not, so far, in the US.

What I don’t understand is why a yacht built in 2019 would already be undergoing a refit. The only reason I can think of is that it has been or will be sold and the new owner wants alterations.

With the money that Putin has retrofitting a yacht like this is like you or I buying new curtains and a rug to refresh a living room.

Thanks for re-linking this. I missed it the first time. An absolutely fascinating perspective from a Russian patriot.

The real problem is that he does see the Ukraine invasion as an internal Russian affair, and that other countries have no right to interfere as he puts down the revolt and erases any Ukraineness.

The very powerful and the very stupid have one thing in common.
Instead of altering their views to fit the facts, they alter the facts
to fit their views … which can be very uncomfortable if you happen to
be one of the facts that needs altering.

Tbf, the US hasn’t built a significant chunk of its economy on catering to dark money from Russia and other places.

No, but we do seem to have a significant chunk of one party’s politicians dependent on Russian dark money, so…

From a Bloomberg article:

Chubais, 66, is one of the few 1990s-era economic reformers who’d remained in Putin’s government and had maintained close ties with Western officials

Best to get out before Putin starts the “self-purification” of Russia.

US State Department: ‘Whoa whoa whoa, where do you think you’re going off to little stooge?’

Edit: context for that comment

How did he even get onto an international flight to Dubai with a useless passport? Multiple passport scans and eyes on and nobody caught it until he was already on board?

Sus.

ETA an older Reuters piece stated that he once had three US passports.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trump-russia-idUSKBN1D14YH

It is rare but legal to hold three valid passports.

People can apply for more than one passport under limited circumstances, including when a foreign country will deny entry to someone holding a passport showing travel to certain other countries or when a visa request is being processed but a person needs a valid passport for immediate travel, a State Department official said…
