Some of them may well be patriotic fuckwits (brainwashed by Russian media, or otherwise) but given that some public servants were “told” to attend, let’s be sure these athletes were there of their own free will.
Which is almost impossible to prove and if they were, they may still claim to have been “encouraged” to go and did so in fear of the consequences of not going, even though it was not something they would ever have done otherwise. And the act of saying so also gets them in the shit.
They can’t win - and some may not deserve to and some may.
