2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine (Part 1)

That could happen. Or that could not happen. @KathyPartdeux makes a good point that we can’t let one possible outcome paralyze people from taking action.

Preemptively surrendering means they have better spin.

Those nationalist assholes will want to flex either way, fuck them.

Seconded. This feels right in line with "we can’t do anything about our right wing hate mongers, because it will make them even worse." Don’t buy it, won’t buy it.

Cue War of the Worlds Martians felled by microbes. I feel bad for the guys involved, they did not ask for this, but not for the assholes who directed them to do it. Someone knew what would happen and did not care,

Yep. Regular vehicles aren’t armored, and regular Russian and NATO rounds can destroy an engine with a few shots. Or perforate the driver/gunner. It is a “make do” tactic used where conventional armored vehicles aren’t available, but heavy machine guns are.

Shit, Russia WISHES it was going as well as Afghanistan.

“Our services thought instead that the cost of conquering Ukraine would have been monstrous and the Russians had other options” to bring down the government of Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky, he [Gen Burkhard] added.

It sounds to me a lot like the French intelligence had the right facts but drew the wrong conclusions. While US intelligence thought that Russia was much stronger and could take control of Ukraine more easily, resulting in them having the wrong facts but the right concussion.

How does this compare to the usual levels of conscription in Russia?

Even if the number reported is usual, it’s likely the actual number that they will attempt to conscript will be more than cited in the decree.

And of course Shoigu is lying when he claims none of the new conscripts will be sent to conflict zones.

Yeah, in their 9 years there they lost about 15k soldiers. They may have already lost more than that in less than a month in Ukraine.
