Certainly the Russians want us to believe they may be crazy enough to use nukes in this conflict, but just because they want us to believe it doesn’t necessarily mean it isn’t true. Sure, they may be bluffing and I definitely hope that’s the case, but Putin has already done more violent, irrational stuff while in office than Nixon did. (With the possible exception of declaring war on drugs)
Unfortunately, that might still be debatable. The bombings of Laos and Cambodia, the intentional sabotage of the peace process in 1968–all of that led to hundreds of thousands of deaths. Putin will catch up, for sure. But at this point it’s neck-and-neck.
Fun fact: Nixon was already well on his way to being impeached for the Operation Menu bombings and cover-up when Watergate intervened.
Fair enough! (Although he entered office in 1969.)
But he was working against the peace process before becoming president.
