3 realities of postpartum depression to keep in mind as you read news from Capitol car chase

Depression and psychosis are different clinical illnesses. Mania and rage do not = psychosis. Mania is an elevated mood, rage is an emotion, and psychosis is a clinical illness in which a person loses touch with reality, often presenting with delusions and hallucinations. This is important to point out because postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis are two separate disorders.

Thank you so much for this wonderful article, especially clarifying that postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis are different illnesses. I am disappointed that a mental health professional would make the claim that there are cases in which women with postpartum depression kill their children. Research says otherwise. This is a barrier to women seeking help.

Women with PPD do not target their children, nor their husbands. That is a false claim.
