8 killed in shootings at Atlanta-area spas

Yeah, me too. Join the club. I was born up north, raised here, and still live here in the ATL area. I’m aware of all that and experienced all that too.

Or, very often, in the urban areas they police. And not just because they’ve been priced out of buying there.

if we can all agree that the south is to blame, then we can wash our hands of being part of a society which has the serious problem of white supremacy

we don’t have to look at capitalism. we don’t have to look at our own local communities. we don’t have to talk to our friends and family about racial issues. we can just point fingers.

it really is much simpler that way.

This. And to bring it all back to the topic at hand, this case is a perfect example of this kind of intersectionality of these issues that are plaguing America.

International, really. Even just calling it a US problem is letting people off the hook who should be on it.

or, to put another way, alleged racist murderer is aware he’s a murderer but has not acknowledged his racism, but is instead doubling down on the sexism.

Why do “massage parlors” like the ones involved have predominantly Asian workers? Is it because of the particulars of human trafficking for these businesses? Is it because of racism on the part of patrons of these businesses? Is it like hotels being owned by Indians or people of Indian descent or dry cleaning businesses by Koreans or people of Korean descent?

It seems like there’s a weird race/sex thing going on fundamentally with our society in relation to these businesses even if you factor out murderous assholes. It seems really critical if for some reason we are just ignoring trafficking of women involved with these businesses because they are Asian.

It’s complicated. Sometimes there’s a concentration of people of a particular ethnicity in a particular industry such as in the hotel industry[1] or nail salons[2] for reasons that are actually pretty awesome. Motivated people found a good idea and shared it with friends and family. Massage parlors aren’t one of those heartwarming stories. [3] Many are linked to human trafficking.

unfortunately the stories behind nail salons aren’t always so great either:

a lot of times our immigration laws are used against workers. the more draconian the laws are the more compliant undocumented workers have to be, and the lower their wages the lower everybody’s wages are.

im pretty sure the whole reason trump wanted a wall was to keep the labor costs for his hotels as low as possible. ( well that, his racism, and his intrinsic horribleness as a human being )

Are you seriously unaware of how Western societies have long fetishized Asian women in certain hypersexualized ways?

There’s a lot of info out there that could help answer your question.

“The main problem with white women is they’ve become too feminist” for the far right, Lim writes. “By contrast, Asian women are seen as naturally inclined to serve men sexually and are also thought of as slim, light-skinned and small, in adherence to Western norms of femininity.”
