I am not surprised. In my soph year I was on a work-study program on Wards Island on the Harlem River, working for the NYC Dept. for Environmental Protection. (My ‘thing’ was pumps.) That got me into dozens of waste water pumping stations throughout the 5 boroughs; all underground, moving sewage from one location to another. Most of the stations I visited were equipped with some piping and valves from the early 20th century, too big and expensive to replace without shutting a lot of things down… which is what happens when you don’t upgrade critical infrastructure.
