Is there a version that doesn’t rely on you trusting Google’s software to be acting in your best interests (unlike all the other times they have been caught)?

Well, that’s the problem. The people who really need it won’t use it, and probably don’t use Chrome, and wouldn’t know what a browser extension was. What’s needed is a similar tool for smart TVs to fact check Fox News, preinstalled by the manufacturer. Or to block Fox News altogether.
